The United States women’s soccer team fought back from a two-goal deficit to draw with the Netherlands 2-2 in their opening match of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The Netherlands took the lead in the 19th minute when Vivianne Miedema scored from the penalty spot. The Dutch doubled their lead in the 39th minute when Jill Roord scored from close range.

The United States came out firing in the second half and pulled one goal back in the 54th minute when Sophia Smith scored from the penalty spot. The Americans then equalized in the 81st minute when Megan Rapinoe scored from a free kick.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw, a result that was fair on both teams. The United States will now face New Zealand in their next match on July 2.
