Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has launched a new initiative to help schools get safer. The Greenlights Grant Initiative is designed to simplify the federal grant application process for schools and connect them with resources to support mental health programs and safer learning environments.

The Greenlights Grant Initiative is a partnership between McConaughey’s just keep livin Foundation and the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund. The initiative is funded by a $5 million grant from Everytown for Gun Safety.

The initiative will provide schools with a variety of resources, including:

- Technical assistance on school safety planning
- Funding for mental health programs
- Training on how to identify and respond to potential threats

McConaughey said that he was inspired to launch the initiative after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in May 2022.
“After the tragedy in Uvalde, I spoke with parents and families who were devastated by the loss of their loved ones,” McConaughey said in a statement. “They asked me to do one thing: ‘Make their lives matter.'”
McConaughey said that the Greenlights Grant Initiative is a way to honor the victims of gun violence and to help keep other children safe.
“We know that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to school safety,” McConaughey said. “But we believe that the Greenlights Grant Initiative can help schools take steps to make their campuses safer.”
