Erik Karlsson Traded to Penguins in Blockbuster Three-Team Deal

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks in a three-team trade that also involved the Montreal Canadiens, the teams announced Sunday.

In exchange for Karlsson, the Penguins sent a 2024 first-round pick (top-10 protected), forwards Mikael Granlund and Mike Hoffman, and defenseman Jan Rutta to the Sharks. The Penguins also received forwards Rem Pitlick and Dillon Hamaliuk and San Jose’s 2026 third-round draft pick.

The Canadiens received Pittsburgh’s 2025 second-round pick, defenseman Jeff Petry, goalie Casey DeSmith, and forward Nathan Legare.

The trade is a major shakeup for all three teams. The Penguins are looking to get back into contention after missing the playoffs last season, and Karlsson is a three-time Norris Trophy winner who gives them a major boost on the blue line. The Sharks are rebuilding and are getting a good haul of assets in return for Karlsson, while the Canadiens are adding some depth to their roster.
